A steelbook is a disc case made from printed metal instead of plastic, sold as a special edition of a Blu-ray, 4K UHD, DVD or video game. It usually carries artwork you won't find on the standard release, it's often made in limited numbers, and the discs inside are typically the same ones from the regular plastic case. Collectors buy them for display, not for a better picture.

That's the short answer. The longer one covers the jargon (WEA, J-card, lenticular, embossing), whether steelbooks are worth the premium, and how to keep a metal case from picking up dents you can never undo.

TL;DR

  • A steelbook is a metal case with a plastic tray inside, sized like a standard disc case.
  • "SteelBook" is a registered trademark of Scanavo; other metal cases go by names like FuturePak or Viva Metal Box.
  • The discs are usually identical to the standard edition. You're paying for the art and the packaging.
  • They're great for display, but a gamble as an investment.
  • Store them upright in protectors and track the exact edition you own.

#What exactly is a steelbook made of?

A steelbook has a thin metal shell for the front, spine and back, wrapped around an inner plastic tray with hubs that hold the discs. The metal is printed with full-color artwork and then finished, often with embossing, a matte or gloss coat, or metallic effects. Because the art wraps around the spine and back in one piece, designers have far more room to play than on a paper insert behind clear plastic.

The name is a brand. SteelBook® is a registered trademark of Scanavo A/S, a Danish packaging company. Collectors use "steelbook" loosely for any metal disc case, the way people say "Kleenex," but other makers sell similar cases under names like FuturePak (formerly MetalPak) and Viva Metal Box. Wikipedia's article on optical disc packaging describes it simply as a trademarked metal case "similar in size and shape to the keep case." The format started with video games and DVDs in the mid-2000s; according to the r/Steelbooks wiki, the first Blu-ray steelbook was Pan's Labyrinth, released in Germany in 2007.

  • Printed metal shell over a plastic tray
  • Exclusive or new artwork, often on the inside too
  • Usually a limited run, often retailer-exclusive
  • Dents and scratches if handled carelessly
  • Costs more than the standard edition
Standard Blu-ray case
  • Molded plastic with a paper insert
  • Theatrical poster art in most cases
  • Stays in print for years
  • Cheap to replace if the case cracks
  • Same discs, in most cases

#Is the movie any different on a steelbook?

Almost always, no. A steelbook edition of a film normally contains the same disc, or discs, as the standard release: same transfer, same audio tracks, same extras. If the standard 4K release is a 4K disc plus a Blu-ray and a digital code, the steelbook usually is too.

There are exceptions. Some premium editions add a bonus disc, art cards, a booklet or a poster, and occasionally a steelbook is the only way to get a particular combination of discs in a given country. Check the edition listing before you buy, and don't assume a steelbook means a better transfer.

A steelbook is an upgrade to the shelf, not to the picture.

#What do all the steelbook terms mean?

Steelbook listings and forum threads lean on shorthand. These are the terms you'll see most:

WEA and WWA

World Exclusive Artwork (WEA) is a design only one retailer sells. World Wide Art (WWA) is the same design sold everywhere, though the finish can vary.

J-card

A paper strip that folds over the top or bottom of the case with the title, specs and barcode. Many collectors keep it, as it affects resale value.

Slipcover and full slip

A cardboard sleeve over the steelbook. A full slip covers the whole case and is usually open on the spine side.

Lenticular

A full slip with a ribbed 3D or flip-image layer glued on. "Double lenticular" means one on the front and one on the back.

Embossing and debossing

Raised (embossed) or pressed-in (debossed) areas of the metal, often on titles or key art, for texture you can feel.

Inner art

Artwork printed on the inside of the case, behind the disc tray, which you only see when you open it.

You'll also see "premium" or "numbered" steelbooks. These come from specialist labels and retailers and add things like full slips, art cards and a hand-numbered run. According to the r/Steelbooks community wiki, some Asian specialty labels make numbered editions in runs from a couple of hundred to a few thousand copies.

#Are steelbooks worth it?

That depends on why you're buying. Here's an honest breakdown:

You want… Steelbook? Why
The best picture and sound Doesn't matter The disc is usually the same as the standard edition
A display shelf that looks great Yes The art and the metal finish are the whole point
A complete set for a franchise Often yes Matching series designs look great side by side
To make money reselling Risky Some appreciate after selling out; many drop below launch price
A disc for the kids' room No Metal dents and scratches; a plastic case is cheaper to replace

The investment angle is the one to be careful with. Even the r/Steelbooks wiki says there's no reliable way to predict which releases will rise in value: some expensive premium editions have fallen, and some cheap retailer exclusives became sought-after. Buy steelbooks for films you love and would rewatch, and treat any resale value as a bonus.

#How do you buy a steelbook without regretting it?

Steelbooks often sell out on preorder, so a little planning helps:

  1. 01

Decide which edition you actually want

The same film can have several steelbooks across countries and retailers. Compare the art, the discs included, and whether it's 4K, Blu-ray or both.

  2. 02

    Check the region before importing

Most 4K UHD discs are region-free, but a bundled Blu-ray can be locked to Region A, B or C, and DVDs use regions 1 to 6. Make sure your player will play it.

  3. 03

Preorder from the retailer that has the exclusive

WEA designs are only sold by one store. If you miss the preorder, the secondary market is usually more expensive.

  4. 04

Inspect it the day it arrives

Look for dents, scratches, crushed corners and discs that have come off their hubs. Report damage straight away while the return window is open.

  5. 05

Add it to your catalog before it goes on the shelf

Record the exact edition, retailer and condition while you still have the box and receipt in front of you.

#How do you store steelbooks so they don't dent or scratch?

Metal is tougher than plastic in some ways and much more fragile in others. A cracked plastic case costs a dollar to replace; a dented steelbook is permanent. These habits prevent most of the damage collectors complain about:

#How should you shelve and track a steelbook collection?

Steelbooks look best grouped together rather than scattered among plastic cases, so many collectors give them their own shelf, face-out for favorites and spine-out for the rest, ordered alphabetically or by franchise.

Tracking matters more for steelbooks than for anything else you own, because so many editions of the same film exist. "I own Dune on 4K" isn't enough when there are standard and steelbook releases from different stores. The details worth recording for every steelbook:

  • Edition and retailer: WEA or WWA, which store, numbered or not.
  • Format and discs: 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, plus any bonus discs and digital code.
  • Extras: J-card, slipcover, lenticular, art cards.
  • Condition: sealed or opened, any dents or scratches.
  • Shelf location, and what you paid.

#Frequently asked questions

What is a steelbook?

A steelbook is a disc case made of printed metal instead of plastic, used for special editions of Blu-rays, 4K UHDs, DVDs and video games. Inside is a plastic tray that holds the discs. SteelBook is a registered trademark of the Danish packaging company Scanavo.

Is the movie different on a steelbook?

Usually not. In most cases the discs inside a steelbook are the same ones sold in the standard plastic case, so picture, sound and extras are identical. You are paying for the packaging and artwork, so check the edition listing if you want to be sure.

Are steelbooks worth it?

They're worth it if you value display, artwork and limited editions, and if you'd watch the film anyway. They are a poor bet as an investment: some go up in value after selling out, but many end up cheaper than their launch price.

Should you open a steelbook or keep it sealed?

Most collectors open them to enjoy the inner art and check the discs. A sealed copy can matter for resale, but an unopened case can hide a disc that came loose and got scratched in transit.

How do you stop steelbooks from getting scratched or dented?

Store them upright and snug on the shelf, never stacked loose, and use clear plastic steelbook protectors. Handle them by the edges and keep the original J-card or slipcover, since it adds to the value.

Is a steelbook the same as a slipcover?

No. A slipcover is a cardboard sleeve that slides over a case. A steelbook is the case itself, made of metal. Some steelbooks come with a full slipcover or a lenticular slip over the top.
